THE MAYANOT GALLERY IN JERUSALEM – WHERE JEWISH SOURCES AND ISRAELI ART MEET

by Pascale Zonszain

A group of dancing rabbis circling a flute player, the Judean hills drowsy under the summer sun, a silent room that opens onto a garden – all these scenes from a country whose experiences blend its biblical traditions and its everyday landscapes can be enjoyed by any passer-by who takes a moment to look through the Mayanot Gallery’s windows in downtown Jerusalem. As people discover this location – a unique museum that is open to the world, a breath of invigorating fresh air to be savored by the city’s residents – they slow down so as to look more closely at all the pictures that Yael Gahnassia has set out for them, a veritable feast for the eyes. In 2006, Mayanot Gallery will have been part of the Jerusalem landscape for 20 years. A real encounter between a woman and a city, a mutual discovery, and above all a reunion.
